Abstract

Low oil recovery and high water cut are common problems encountered. Polymer injection is widely used because of its simple technology operation and high recovery rate. Hydrolyzed polyacrylamides (HPAM) are the most widely used polymers in polymer injection. HPAM polymers showed severe degradation when injected into high temperature and salinity reservoirs. These polymers also pollute the environment as they remain in the produced water after separation from the oil recovery. This study aims to produce biopolymers from lime peel raw materials, examine the characterization of biopolymers such as FTIR, viscosity, thermal and rheological tests and compare and analyze biopolymers from lime peels with xanthan gum. The method used in this research is conventional heating extraction. FTIR analysis proves that the extracted substance is pectin. The viscosity values of pectin were 0.498 cp, 0.548 cp and 0.589 while the viscosity values of xanthan gum were 1.434 cp, 4.791 cp and 14.23 cp. The viscosity of xanthan gum is greater than the viscosity of pectin. The addition of salinity reduces the viscosity of both biopolymers. The decrease in viscosity of pectin in thermal testing was 21%, 22% and 28%, while the percentage decrease in viscosity from xanthan gum was 25%, 48% and 43%, respectively. The addition of salinity to the thermal test on both biopolymers had several concentrations that passed the thermal test. In rheological testing, both biopolymers are non-Newtonian fluids and the viscosity of both biopolymers decreases due to the addition of salinity.
