Abstract

Students in establishing relationships with other people either with their peers or people around them will probably have a conflict which raises a disappointing and painful situation. This is what makes student relations with other people around him become problematic and requires an attitude to forgive. One of the factors that affect individuals to give forgiveness is empathy. This study aims to determine the relationship between empathy and forgiveness on students of Islamic University of Riau. The subjects in this study are 270 students of Riau Islamic University which taken by using cluster sampling techniques. The instrument of this study uses the empathy scale and forgiveness scale. The data were analyzed by using product moment correlation analysis and applied in SPSS version 22.0 for Windows. Based on the analysis test obtained the value of the correlation coefficient of 0.221 with a value of p = 0,000 (p <0.05). This shows that there is a positive and significant relationship between empathy and forgiveness on students at Islamic University of Riau. The higher empathy will establish the higher forgiveness. On the other hand, the lower empathy, will establish the lower forgiveness. Thus the hypothesis in this study was accepted. Keywords: Empathy, Forgiveness, Students
