Abstract

Well-mennered interaction is the identity of Malay people. However, nowadays it starts to fade. The purpose of this research is to know the description of well-mennered interaction on the students of Riau Islamic University (UIR) based on Malay culture perspective. This research involved 398 students chosen by using cluster random sampling technique in three stages. The measurement instruments used were the scale of well-mennered interaction which was arranged by the researcher based on the concept of well-mennered interaction proposed by Effendy (2012). The research results show that the majority of UIR students show modesty at medium category. If reviewed from the modesty aspects, the aspect of willingness to sacrifice themselves for other people shows the highest mean rank 1532,32, while the lowest is the aspect of positioning themselves at the suitable position with mean rank 1345,70. If reviewed from the gender, there is no significant different of modesty between male and female students, likewise with the third semester and fifth semester students, there is no significant difference. Based on the rank of ages, the research results show that the students at age 17-10 years old are more modest in the interpersonal communication compared to the students age 20-25 years old with mean rank 210,56 and 188,77. Out of four faculties being investigated, The Faculty of Education and Teacher Training especially English Education Major shows the highest level of modesty and the lowest one is the Faculty of Economy. The modesty of UIR students of all tribes being investigated show that the majority is in medium category.
