Abstract

The tradition of Nias traditional marriage is one of the unique cultural heritage values that are exsisted and growth. In Nias traditional wedding there are aspects of culture and customs has rich in meaning from physical objects, food and speech. The purpose of this research is to find out the ethnographic concept in Nias traditional wedding in Pekanbaru, which has been carried out for generations. The informants in this study were participants of the wedding ceremony, the leader of the tradition, bride family representatives, representatives of Nias cultural institutions in Pekanbaru who were directly involved in Nias wedding. The results showed that the concept of ethnographic communication in traditional Nias weddings consisted of speaking communities with the use of regional languages throughout a series of traditional events, communication activities in pre-wedding events, marriage, and after marriage, the communication component by conducting long or short chats in giving and receive traditional symbols that have joyful meanings, communication competence is symbolized by two leaders of the traditions who communicate with each other, language variation at Nias traditional wedding parties is the use of Gunungsitoli language areas throughout the series of events.
