Abstract

The use of diesel oil in the oil base mud formulation has several disadvantages so that it has a significant impact when used. To minimize the weaknesses caused by diesel oil, the industry is looking at biodiesel as a renewable energy that is more environmentally friendly, low toxicity, and biodegradable. In this research, biodiesel was made using jatropha oil as the base ingredient. The production of biodiesel was successfully carried out by a trans-esterification process to produce jatropha biodiesel. The results show that jatropha biodiesel has met the quality standard of biodiesel where the density value is 890 kg cm3, the kinematic viscosity is 4.5 mm2/s, the flash point is 150 ℃, and the cloud point is 15 ℃. The mixture of jatropha biodiesel + diesel oil for the use of oil base mud in this study has also been characterized based on variations concentration of the mixture are 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% of the total volume of base oil. The results show that the mixture of jatropha biodiesel + diesel oil has been the quality standards required for oil base mud. The density value of the mixture of jatropha biodiesel + diesel oil was obtained between 841 - 852 kg/cm3, the kinematic viscosity was between 3.47 - 3.65 mm2/s, the flash point was between 71 - 79 ℃, and the pour point was between 2 - 4 ℃. The five types of mixed concentrations are used for five drilling mud samples. Based on the test result to mud density, plastic viscosity, yield point, and gel strength, it was found that the mixture of jatropha biodiesel + diesel oil was very potential as a base oil in oil base mud mud by obtaining a mud density between 8.85 - 9.13 ppg, plastic viscosity between 24 – 26 cp, yield points ranges between 12 - 13 lb/100ft2, gel strength between 4 - 7 lb/100ft2.
