Abstract

Additive Loss Control Materail (LCM) in water based mud plays a very important role in maintaining and controlling fluid losses in an oil and gas drilling operation. Several types of additives such as CMC (Carboxymethyl Cellulose) dan Starch (Pregelantized) have been known and have even been widely applied in the field. In this study, researchers were very interested in a new material called Graphene Oxide (GO) as an additive to control fluid loss. Because one of the physical properties of GO has a porous and impermeable membrane, GO will be able to control fluid loss to formation. The synthesis of GO usually uses a method that is quite difficult and expensive, whereas here the researcher uses a simpler collision marbles method to synthesize GO from carbon batteries Zn-C. The characterization results showed that GO batteries Zn-C was successfully synthesized using the collision marbles method. FTIR graph analysis has shown that there are GO functional groups of Zn-C batteries, namely C-O, C=O, C=C, and O-H which bond together to form a hexagonal. SEM topography shows that the GO formed has a hexagonal pore structure. The percentage of EDS results to show that the main elements forming the GO of Zn-C batteries are the carbon (C) element of 87.05% and the element of oxygen (O) of 11.36%. Based on the UV-Vis spectrum, the GO absorbance peaks have been formed at a wavelength of 228.9 nm. The GO Zn-C battery that has been succesfully synthesized is tested for the impact of loss of filtrate volume. The concentration variation was investigated to assess its effect on the volume of the filtrate, namely 0.2%, 0.4%, 0.6%, 0.8%, and 1%. The results of the filtration loss test with the addition of all types of concentrations showed that the loss of filtrate volume was smaller than before the addition of additives. This indicates that GO batteries Zn-C has the potential as a fluid loss control additive in drilling mud. However, based on the variation in concentration, it was found that the best value for the volume of filtrate and mud cake was the addition of 1% GO Zn-C battery with the value of the filtrate volume obtained was 13.9 ml and the thickeness of the mud cake was 1.48 mm. Before the addition of GO Zn-C Battery, the value of the filtrate volume obtained was 15.2 ml and the thickness of the mud cake was 2 mm.
