Abstract

Communities which are in contact with multiple languages uses code switching. The aim of this research is to find out the types and reason of using codeswitching (whether it is from L1 to L2 or L2 to L1) by the examiners and supervisors during a full English thesis examination. The Descriptive qualitative method has been adapted for this research. This research was conducted in the seminar room of the English department of FKIP UIR where the data was taken from 4 informants. A documentation of the thesis presentation was taken as the raw data for this research. The data was transcripted and organized based on the needs of this research. The organized data then was analized according to the research aim and translated to find out the form of the original conversation The researcher had acquired 187 data from the 2 thesis defenses. From the 187 data,[number 1-69] shows the usage of intra sentential codeswitching, [number 70-91] shows the usage of inter sentential code switching, [number 92-126] shows the usage of tag switching, [127-139] shows the usage of multiple code switching types and [number 140-187] shows the usage of L1. As for the reason of using code switching, for emphatic reason a total of 77 times, for discussing particular topics 49 times, for using local interjections 38 times, to repeat certain informations 4 times, for clarifying certain information 18 times, for quoting somebody else once and not using code switching to express group identity. Each examiner had their own preferences in using the different types code switching and also the use of L1, so it cannot be said they all use the same type of code switching.
