Abstract
The development of the Zapin Bengkalis dance tradition to Zapin Meranti is based on the elements contained in a dance. The elements contained in dance are motion, floor design, makeup, costumes, music, dynamics, themes, lighting, and property. This development is based on the creativity of a choreographer who made changes in the development of the Zapin Bengkalis Tradition dance to Zapin Meranti, but did not change the traditional form. The purpose of the development of the Zapin Bengkalis dance tradition to Zapin Meranti is to revive cultural values among the community, implement Malay customs as the identity of an area, especially in the field of dance, and as entertainment. The theory used is Soedarsono's theory (1989: 89), development is a creation, renewal, and creativity, adding to, or enriching without leaving the basic values of existing traditions. Sources and types of data are primary data and secondary data where primary data is data obtained directly through observation, interviews, documentation, and secondary data is data obtained indirectly such as the results of other people's research, from books on development and culture , documentation and personal notes related to the research object. The method used is descriptive analysis method using qualitative data using data collection techniques by observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study are the Zapin Bengkalis Tradition dance to the Zapin Meranti used to be only a dance that was staged (as entertainment) and competed between the studios in the Meranti Islands Regency. The result of the development of the Zapin Bengkalis dance to the Merap Zapin is a work in a new form to serve as the regional identity of the Meranti Islands Regency which is still guided by the Bengkalis Regency (parent) and does not eliminate the value of existing traditions.
