Abstract

Drilling equipment in the oil and gas industry, which is dominated by iron, allows a very large corrosion if the iron is not coated. Parts of drilling equipment that need to be coated include tubing, casing, pipe line and tank parts that have iron material. One of the causes of this drilling equipment is water-based drilling fluid (water base mud), where the drilling fluid will have a low pH caused by mixing the drilling fluid with gases such as CO2 and H2S which are corrosive. In this study, iron samples with a size of 3.5 cm x 3.5 cm x 0.12 cm were coated through two types of coating, namely GO + epoxy resin and epoxy resin coating without GO by dipping. GO in this study has been synthesized from the graphite material of the Zn-C battery using the liquid phase exfoliation method. Where this method is known to be able to separate the graphite layer into Graphene Oxide. These two coating samples were analyzed using H2SO4 solution with three different pH variations, namely 2, 3 and 4. The corrosion rate of each type of pH was calculated using the corrosion rate formula. So that the weight reduction value of the two samples has been tested using three time parameters, namely 3 days (72 hours), 6 days (144 hours) and 9 days (216 hours). Based on the results of heavy testing of iron samples, it was found that the corrosion rate of samples using pH 2 coated with GO was able to reduce the corrosion rate by 0.044 mmpy compared to iron samples which were only coated with epoxy resin without GO of 0.092 mmpy. The success of using GO + epoxy resin coatings reached 52%, while using epoxy resin coatings only reached 25%. For the corrosion rate with pH 3, the ratio of the addition of GO and without GO is 56% and 19% and pH 4 is 57% and without GO 16%. It is not recommended to use iron drilling equipment without using a coating because the test results show that the corrosion rate is very high, namely of 0.124 mmpy.
