Abstract
On one hand, the installation of billboards is inseparable from the role of the community as objects of consumption of the contents of the billboards, besides that, the placement of these billboards often penetrates the urban public space (Public Space) which is a place for interaction between people in an urban space. On the other hand, billboards as an outside medium for marketing goods and services have an increasingly important role as a marketing medium other than conventional media. The purpose of this study is to identify the existence of billboards on the aesthetics of space and people's perceptions of billboards that are on the streets of General Sudirman, Pekanbaru. The installation of billboards in an urban area that contains a commercial message dominates the view, often overpowers the shape and facade of buildings and disturbs the visual harmony of the surrounding environment. The forms and buildings that fill the urban space are shaped by the mass order. The variety of billboards displayed creates chaos and social disorder, this condition makes it difficult to capture information due to the overlap of the billboards. Not all of the open-air media advertisements in Pekanbaru City have licenses. This was proven by the raids on unlicensed billboards carried out by the Pekanbaru City Civil Service Police Unit earlier this year. In January 2017, the Civil Service Police Unit of the Pekanbaru City Order Service ordered 50 billboards and illegal billboards. As many as 75% of them are not licensed. Dozens of billboards must be put in order because they are not properly installed, for example pasted in public facilities such as parks and sidewalks, thus disturbing pedestrian comfort. Some are even installed on electric poles, street lights, trees, and also traffic lights.
