Abstract

Drilling mud is an important factor in the drilling process, drilling mud has several functions that can help the drilling process. Filtration loss is one of the problems often faced when drilling. Activated carbon is one of the environmentally friendly alternative additives that can control filtration loss without changing the rheology of drilling mud. Palm kernel shells are waste from oil palm which can be processed into activated carbon which has adsorption properties that bind the mud fluids well. The particle size of drilling mud additives can affect filtration loss and mud cake, this particle size of additives can fill mud cake pores and reduce mud cake permeability, so that the lost filtrate to formation becomes reduced. Making palm shells into activated carbon through the process of dehydration, carbonization and activation of carbon in physics (heating). To determine the effect of particle size of palm shell activated carbon on drilling mud filtration loss and mud cake testing with activated carbon particle size of 150 µm, 75 µm, 60 µm, 50 µm and ≤ 40 µm using a tool called filter press, particles increasingly this small is obtained by sieve analysis. In this study it was investigated whether particle size affected the amount of filtrate lost to the formation Based on the results of the test, the activated carbon particle size of 150 µm and 75 µm results in a value of filtration loss that exceeds the API standard. The particle size is 60 µm, 50 µm and ≤ 40 µm have a value of filtration loss that does not exceed the API standard. The mud cake thickness of each particle size tested decreases as the particle size decreases.
