Abstract

Wax paraffins problem in crude oil that occurs in the upstream oil and gas industry can cause losses due to reducing the quality of crude oil. Many methods can be used to resolve it, one of them is chemical. The chemical that used is bioethanol as a solvent derived from agricultural waste, namely rice chuff. This study aims to prevent the growth of paraffin by analyzing the reduction of crude oil pour point after being mixed with the solvent under the mixing ratios variation including 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 50% and 100%. This study is an experimental research, which in the making of bioethanol used several general stages; those are hydrolysis, fermentation and distillation. Hydrolysis is a process of heating a sample by using a hotplate or oven at 105oC for three hours with H2SO4 (sulfate acid) as the medium. The next step is fermentation, aims to produce alcohol by adding saccharomyces for two grams. Furthermore, the sample is allowed to stand for 5 days in a series of tools with an anaerobic method. The last is distillation process. In this step, the liquid and solid in the sample were separated first. Then, the sample was put in a distillation device at 78oC and produced a bioethanol. Hereafter, the bioethanol is characterize by examining the density, SG, API, color, odor, pH, viscosity, flash point and fire point. Moreover, the pour point value also examined on the crude oil. Based on the research finding, it can be stated that the greater the ratio of mixing solvent used (5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 50% to 100%), the lower the pour point value. This was proven by the sample A, B and C. It was when the ratio mixing at 100%, it reduced the pour point in the amount of 3oC. In the sample A, the pour point value was 44oC, after the solvent was mixed at a ratio of 100%, the pour point value decreased to 41oC.
