Abstract

Riau Province Gendang silat music is one of the traditional arts in Dumai City Riau Province, which is usually displayed at various events such as wedding ceremonies, welcoming large guests and other official and unofficial events. In this gendang silat music there are three types of musical instruments namely, a nafiri, gong, long drum and played in groups by four players. The purpose of this research was to describe the function of the gendang silat music in the community of Purnama Village West Dumai District Dumai City Riau Province. This writing uses a descriptive method that is descriptive in nature, to conduct research that is descriptive of a situation or event as it is supported by existing facts. Data collection techniques used in this research are observation, interview, and documentation techniques. The research approach used in this research is a qualitative approach. The theory used by the writer in this research is the theory of Alan P. Merriam (2002). The results of this research conclude that the function of gendang silat music that exists in society is the function of emotional expression, namely music as a means to express feelings or emotions for listeners especially the community, the function of entertainment, namely music as entertainment aims to bring pleasure and inner satisfaction to society, the communication function is be a medium for conveying the values of goodness, religion or belief through melodies or song lyrics to listeners, the symbolic function is the function of music in all societies as a symbolic representation that can be seen from aspects, ideas in the music such as tempo, reaction function physical, namely music can stimulate human nerve cells and it causes the audience or society to move along to the rhythm of the music, a function of cultural continuity which contains teachings and how society develops and continues its culture to the next generation. utnya, the function of community integrity, namely a music can foster unity and integrity because music can be a forum for community associations.
