Abstract

This study aims to obtain the optimum mechanical properties and composition of the various mixtures of oil palm empty fruit bunches, aluminum powder, and polyester resin as brake lining materials. In general, fillers commonly used in brake linings include MgO, asbestos, and CaCO3. This study using oil palm empty fruit bunches, aluminum powder with a polyester resin binder. The stages of this research began with making samples by preparing tools and materials, refining OPEFB fibers with a size of 50 mesh, then testing samples consisting of Brinell hardness test and Ogoshi wear test. Based on the results of research that has been carried out on a mixture of palm empty fruit bunches, aluminum powder, and polyester resin, the highest hardness is in sample 1 with a composition of 30% OPEFB: 20% Al: 50% Polyester with a value of 31.5 kg / mm2, when compared with the SAE standard with a value of 68 HR which is converted to Brinell to be 33 BHN, the hardness value in sample 1 has not reached the SAE standard. In the wear test results, each sample has a lower wear value than the SAE standard. The lowest wear value is in sample 1 with a composition of 30% OPEFB: 20% Al: 50% Polyester with a value of 0.5434x10-7 mm2 / kg. Of the three samples, only sample 1 is recommended as a brake lining material because the hardness value is close to the SAE standard, namely 33 BHN and the wear is 5 x 10-4 mm2 / kg
