Abstract
Blacksmith is the skill or ability to form steel into the products needed, so that the resulting product can be used for long-lasting use, it is necessary to carry out a surface hardening process. Flame hardening is a surface hardening process using direct flame produced from oxy acetylene gas. This research was conducted to investigate the effect of brine media on the hardness of the heat treatment process using an oxy acetylene flame. In this study, the used leaf spring steel material from the colt diesel truck which is subjected to flame hardening and quenching treatments is used. The results showed that the highest price of hardness was obtained in the flame hardening method with 15% brine as a cooling medium, namely 58.5 HRC with a tensile strength value of 815.76 Mpa, and a decrease in hardness in the percentage of 10% brine, namely to 48 HRC with tensile strength. amounting to 741.75 Mpa, and at 5% brine cooling with a hardness price of 48 HRC with a tensile strength of 725.42 Mpa, while the hardening treatment by blacksmiths with oil cooling has the highest tensile strength, namely 1215.54 Mpa with the price of hardness. amounting to 52.5 HRC.
