Abstract
The coating process of Ni-Cr and Cr with electroplating method is much done as a finishing process with the aim of producing a coating that serves as a decorati-protective in the motor vehicle. In electroplating process, the base coating, timing, and current plays an important role in coating formation. The study aims to determine the comparison of the basic layers of Ni-Cr and Cr, to the coating thickness and adhesivity of the resulting Ni-Cr and Cr layers. In this research, the material to be coated is Swing Arm which uses AISI 1010 steel as cathode, and pure nickel and lead (PB) as anode. The specimen of the electroplating results is measured in thickness and is performed adhesivity testing to determine the bonding power of layers on the Ni-Cr and chrome layers. The current used is 4.5 A with a voltage of 12 volts and a Ni dyeing time of 30 minutes (constant) with dyeing time of chrome 25 seconds, 30 seconds, and 35 seconds. The specimen of electroplating is weighed and measured in thickness. The results showed that the longer dyeing time, the higher the value of thickness gained. The highest thickness is obtained on a specimen dyed with a current of 4.5 A in a 30-minute nickel immersion and the immersion time of 35 seconds is 0.03321 mm. While the lowest thickness value occurs in a specimen with a current of 4.5 A in the The immersion time of Chrome is 25 seconds which is 0.0124 mm. However, from the observation it was obtained that the steel coated with a silver-colored chrome into the grey and not lustre. Whereas steel coated with Ni-Cr has silver bluish color with better gloss. The addition of time to the Ni-Cr coating process and the coating of the chrome does not affect the physical appearance, but a longer time gives better gloss results. In adhesivity testing on electroplating There is a slight difference in the layer of the chrome which at the time of coating of 35 seconds occurs slightly cracks in the curves that are affected by the bend test radius, it occurs because the longer the coating time will be effect on thick coating and bend test result.
