Abstract
The Cu-Ni-Cr and Ni-Cr coating process by electroplating method is usually carried out as a finishing process with the aim of producing a layer that functions as a decorative-protective on a motorized vehicle. In the electroplating process, the base layer, time, and current play an important role in the formation of layers. This study aims to determine the effect of Cu base layer, time and current on the thickness and adhesivity of the Cu-Ni-Cr and Ni-Cr layers produced. In this research, the material to be coated is Swing Arm which uses AISI 1010 steel as a cathode, and pure copper, pure nickel and lead (Pb) as an anode. The current used is 4.5 Amperes and 5 Amperes with Cu dipping time of 15 minutes (constant) and Ni dipping time of 25 minutes (constant) with Cr dipping time of 25 seconds, 30 seconds, and 35 seconds. Electroplating specimens were weighed and their thickness measured. The results of the physical appearance of the bluish silver-colored Ni-Cr in specimen B2 give better gloss results, however, specimens in A1 do not show a good gloss, because the time and the smaller currents do not show good gloss while the time and current are longer gives darker shine results. And also on the results of Cu-Ni-Cr coating with a current of 4.5 A and Cu immersion time of 15 minutes, Ni 25 minutes, and 30 seconds Cr yellowish yellow. The results showed that the longer the immersion time, the higher the thickness value obtained. The highest thickness value was obtained in specimens that were dyed with a current of 5 A in the time of dyeing Cu 15 minutes and Ni 25 minutes and Cr 35 seconds which was equal to 0.05039 mm. while the lowest thickness value occurs in specimens with a current of 4.5 A in the time of dyeing Ni 25 minutes and Cr 25 seconds which is equal to 0.03009 mm.
