Abstract

A fuel cell is an alternative energy generator as a substitute for conventional energy plants that use fuel oil with the basic principles of electrochemistry by converting chemical energy into electricity. With the recent fuel oil crisis, it is very necessary to have an alternative energy for the future that is cheap and environmentally friendly. To solve this problem, a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell composite could be the solution. Utilization of waste is one of the best alternatives to reduce environmental pollution. Waste ash from the burning of oil palm shells is one where the utilization of this oil palm shell is still very limited. This study aims to obtain a good electrical conductivity value and to obtain an optimum mixture composition using palm oil shell ash and graphite as the main component (reinforcement) and epoxy resin as a matrix. Composite pellets with the composition of sample 1 (60%:20%:20%), sample 2 (50%:30%:20%), and sample 3 (40%:40%:20%). The volume fraction is obtained by cold pressing compression at a pressure of five (5) tons. This research also studied the effect of composition on characterization which included density testing and microstructure observations. From the results of the study, it was found that the high electrical conductivity value in sample 3 with a composition ratio (40%:40%:20%) with a value of 49.21 S/cm, the most optimum density value was also in sample 3, namely 0.62 gr /cm3 and good microstructure observations also in sample 3 it can be seen that the graphite carbon has started to spread, this is due to the more dominant graphite content with the binder, because the palm ash is so fine that the palm ash will be difficult to see because it has blended with the resins. In this study, the most optimum results were in sample 3 with the same composition of palm ash and graphite as compared to other samples, which had less graphite than palm ash, this shows that the large graphite carbon factor makes this sample the highest in conducting electric current.
