Abstract
Each year Indonesia produces approximately 64 million tons of waste. Waste at urban areas in Indonesia contains 50-80% organic and 20-50% anorganic. The use of organic waste at urban areas in Indonesia is still minimal. The minimal use of organic waste makes it buildup and causes a bad smell and becomes a source of human disease. In Indonesia, organic waste is dominated by vegetable waste. Vegetable waste can be used to produce gas fuel energy through the biogas system. This study selected 3 types of vegetables that were popular in Indonesia, it is cabbage, spinach and waterspinach. The purpose of this study was to determine the size of the biogas production and the length of retention time and biogas flame test for each sample. The steps of this research begins with the assembly of 3 biogas reactor, raw materials measurement, making mixture, input mixture, collecting reactor data, and the duration of testing of biogas flame test. This research method uses a manometer water level difference measurement to determine the biogas pressure and gas volume development and a timer to measure the length of retention time and the biogas flame test. This study uses a digester with a capacity of 0.025m3. The raw materials for vegetables, water and the starter of this study were determined by the percentage of 60%, 20%, and 20%. After testing, the size of production volume of cabbage, spinach and waterspinach are obtained these are 0.000583m3, 0.00068m3 and 0.000269m3, respectively. And the retention times for cabbage, spinach and waterspinach are 408 hours, 384 hours, and 480 hours, respectively. and the length of the flame testing on biogas of cabbage, spinach and waterspinach were 58 seconds, 1 minute 14 seconds and 32 seconds, respectively. The characteristic of the flame in biogas produces a reddish blue flame.
