Abstract
Composite is a combination of two or more materials that have different phases into a new material and has better properties. Composite is an alternative material to replace metal, this is due to the nature of the fiber composite which is strong and has a lighter weight than metal. Indonesia has a wealth of natural resources in the form of natural fibers that cannot be utilized optimally. So it is necessary to do further research and development. Natural fiber composites (coconut coir) need to be tested to find out how strong the mechanical strength of this composition is, especially in the variation of the fraction 25% coconut fiber + 75% polyester resin 35% coconut coir fiber + 65% polyester resin 45% coconut fiber + 55 % polyester resin, specimen making and testing procedures using ASTM D790-02 for bending and ASTM D256 for impact. The results of the impact and bending tests have differences. The material with the highest fiber composition is the strongest composition in the impact test and vice versa. The material with the least fiber composition is the strongest composition in the bending test. The highest strength in bending is with variations in the fiber fraction of 25% coconut coir + 75% resin, which is a bending value of 31.75 N/mm2, while the impact with the highest strength is with variations in the fiber fraction of 45% coconut coir + 55% resin with a yield of 9.5 j/mm2.
