Abstract

The development of materials science, especially in the field of composites, continues to increase along with the increasing need for material for a product, the use of fiber in composite materials is expected to be an alternative as a substitute for metal and non-metal materials. One of the uses of fiber taken is betel nut fiber, because areca nut is almost evenly distributed throughout Indonesia. Areca nut is a promising material because it is inexpensive, freely available, and has the potential to be a plant that completes its entire life cycle within a year. This study aims to determine the effect of adding betel nut fibers to the mechanical and physical properties of polyester resin and to obtain areca fiber composites with fiber percentages. In this research, betel nut fiber was treated with alkaline immersion. While the resin used is a polyester resin added with a catalyst mixture. The ratio of fiber and resin concentrations randomly (random) is 30%: 70%, 40%: 60% and 50%: 50%. The stages of this research used the hand lay-up method. This composite test uses ASTM D-638 tensile test and ASTM D-790 bending test. From the results of the tests carried out, there are differences in the mechanical properties of the areca fiber composite material on the tensile test and the bending test. In the tensile test, areca fiber composites with a ratio of 50%: 50% obtained good mechanical properties because they have tensile strength, maximum load and the highest modulus of elasticity, namely 8,031 MPa, 837,7 N and 1,036,25 MPa. As for the bending test, the areca fiber composite with a ratio of 50%: 50% has a maximum load of 100.03 N with a deflection of 2.34 mm and a modulus of elasticity of 6,575.3 MPa.
