Abstract

Almost all palm oil mills (PKS) have problems regarding the processing of PKS waste, both solid and liquid waste. Palm oil waste increases with the addition of PKS. Polystyrene (PS) is a polymer with the monomer styrene, a liquid hydrocarbon made commercially from petroleum. In general, particleboard is a type of product made from wood particles. An alternative innovation of substitute materials that can be developed is by utilizing oil palm trunks (BKS) and polystyrene (PS). The purpose of this study was to obtain the physical and mechanical properties of particleboard from a mixture of waste oil palm trunks and polystyrene. The research stages started from making particle board molds, material preparation, refining oil palm trunks, the composition used was 70% BKS and 30% PS with a mesh variation of 8, 10, 16 and the last was specimen testing consisting of density test, moisture content test, thickness expansion test and modulus of elasticity (MOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR) tests.
