Abstract

Pedestrians are the most vulnerable road users. When involved in accidents, the fatality risk they face is greater than other road users (Shinar, 2007). This study aims to analyze the level of safety of pedestrians based on the level of risk determined by the Pedestrian Risk Index (PRI). Case study was conducted on student pedestrians in SMPN 4 Pekanbaru. The observations of pedestrian crossing was made to get the traffic conflict data. Furthermore, the data was analyzed to obtain the value of Pedestrian Risk Index (PRI). Observations are carried out for five days from Monday to Friday, where for the morning conducted from 6:30 - 7:30 and for the afternoons conducted from 16:00 - 17:00. The results of data analysis showed that individual crossing had an average PRI of value is 134.47, while group crossings had an average PRI of value is 7.93. For crossings that conducted in the morning the average PRI of value is 70.88, while for crossings conducted in the afternoon the average PRI of value is 9.53. It concluded that group crossings had higher level of safety than individual crossings and crossings that conducted in the afternoon have a higher level of safety compared to crossings that conducted in the morning.
