Abstract

Relationship between Sense of Humor and Stress in Students Kurnia Sukma Rahmadillah Ritonga Faculty of Psychology Riau Islamic University ABSTRACT Students are one part of academic activities who are future leaders of the nation. This study aims to determine the relationship between sense of humor and stress in students. In this study, researchers used quantitative methods. The total student population in this study was 27,210 students at the Islamic University of Riau, with a sample of 100 respondents. In this study, researchers used cluster random sampling technique. Data collection tools for independent variables were measured using the Multidimensional Sense of Humor Scale (MSHS) from Thorson and Powell modified by Rahmanto (2008) with 42 items, while the dependent variable was measured using the Artharia (2007) research scale and potential stress response from Taylor with 33 items. The results showed that the sense of humor and stress in the majority of students were in the moderate category, namely the sense of humor variable 32% as many as 32 subjects and the stress variable 32% as many as 32 subjects. Based on the results of the analysis using the Pearson product moment correlation technique, it is known that there is an opposite relationship between sense of humor and stress in students. This is indicated by the correlation coefficient (r) = - 0.023 with a significant level of 0.000 (p <0.01). This means that the higher the sense of humor that students have, the lower the stress, on the contrary if the lower the sense of humor, the higher the stress.
