Abstract
Loneliness (kesepian) is when a person feels alone and social relationships are not in accordance with what is expected or wanted, such as feelings of anxiety, and a lack of individual social relations with the social environment. So that most individuals will overcome the loneliness they feel by using Social Media. A large number of internet users are students, reaching 92.6% (APJII, 2018). The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between loneliness and the intensity of the use of social media in students. This research is a quantitative research. The sampling technique used Saturation Sampling with a total of 300 research subjects. The measuring instrument in this study uses the UCLA Loneliness Scale and the Intensity Scale of Using Social Media. This research was conducted on Riau Islamic University students who showed the phenomenon that they were active users of social media and showed a high enough intensity. The results of this study obtained a value of R = 0.389 with p <0.005, namely 0.001, it is concluded that in this study there is a significant relationship between loneliness and the intensity of the use of social media in students.
