Abstract
Carburizing is one method of hardening the skin in materials by adding carbon elements through charcoal and catalyst media. In this study low carbon steel, ST41 with a carbon content of 0.1293% was heated at temperatures of 850oC, 900oC, and 950 ° C for 2 hours followed by cooling with water media. This study aims to obtain optimum hardness and wear resistance values. The results showed that the highest hardness was obtained in specimens undergoing carburizing with a temperature of 950oC which was equal to 85.4 HRB while the lower hardness and wear values were 850oC specimens which were 79.1 HRB. It can be concluded that carburation occurs in specimens heated at 900oC and 950oC with the occurrence of the pearlite layer on the entire surface of the material the higher the temperature (950oC) the thickness of the pearlite layer increases.
