Abstract

The research area is around the Kampar river, Rumbio sub-district, located in the upstream part which is about 100 kilometers from the Barisan Hills that considered as the sediment source,. Kampar River has a total length of 413.5 km, the average width is 143 m and the average depth is 7.7 m. This river is a meander type river that carries suspended sediment supply and bed-load (mixed load) along with its low energy. This study aims to determine the characteristics of quaternary sediments and the distribution of sedimentary facies. The method used is a hand auger to obtain rock core data (1-4 meters) of 8 well points, and trenching (1-8) which is an exposed layer of sediment, then laboratory analysis has been carried out such as sieve analysis to find out sediment grain size distribution, X-Ray Diffraction analysis was used to determine the distribution of mineral types in the study area, this analysis is quite important in order to know the characteristics that are typical of certain depositional environments. From the obtained data, the sediment facies had been determined to produce the sediment facies distributon maps. Several sedimentary facies had been found such as channel with the characteristics of blocky to fining up succession having the dominant spread in the southern part of the research area with a thickness of 200 - 320cm. Oblique accretion with upward fining characteristics is in the northeastern part of the research area with a thickness of 40 cm, as well as Overbank deposits that contained a lot of organic material in the form of roots, stems, and leaves, with the spread relatively eastern to southeastern part of research areas with a thickness of 100 - 160 cm. the meandering river system causes lateral changes in sedimentary facies.
