Abstract
This research was carried out on the Sumba Strait, East Nusa Tenggara. Sumba Strait have a unique characteristics as it is exposed to the influence from the Wallacea transition zone and have two sedimentary sources, Sumba Island and Flores Island. The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics and changes in depositional facies of deep-sea sediment. The sample was acquired by using box cores at a depth of 1585 meters below sea level with a total core of 246 cm sediment. Samples were taken by the Widya Nusantara LIPI Expedition 2016 geology team. The sampel was sedimentologically analyzed to identify the character of grainsize, Foraminifera, Loi, and XRF. The characteristic and size of sediments in the study area are dominated by coarse silt, with poorly sorting, skewness symmetrical and kurtosis mesokurtic. Based on the result of Foraminifera have 19 species and 11 species of planktonic foraminifera bentonite. Based on the results of XRF analysis on sediments core St 03 found several major chemical elements, including Strontium (SR), Rubidium (Rb), Iron (Fe), Titanium (Ti), Potassium (K), Calcium (Ca). The chemical elements Ca is the most abundant element found in sediments and Rb is the least found element. In general, the percentage of carbon and carbonate is 20.09% carbon and 9.67% carbonate, this shows that grain size is very influential on the organic material in the sediment. The finer the sediment granules, the higher the organic material, the grainsize analysis indicated the dominant sediments size is coarse silt.
