Abstract

There are several quite interesting short stories presented in the novel “On The Prayer Mat of Love” (original tiltle: Di Atas Sajadah Cinta) authored by Habiburrahman El Shirazy. This novel generally describes the physical and mental struggles of a young woman and a young man to get true love that is blessed by Allah. Lately, one of the stories that has become interesting topic of various small talk, room discussions and other scientific forums is the novel “On the Prayer Mat of Love” authored by Habiburrahman El Shirazy. In the introduction, the author states that this book contains only Islamic exemplary stories collected from many sources. This suggests that the novel “On The Prayer Mat of Love” by Habiburrahman El Shirazy contains exemplary attitudes, lessons, examples which are in accordance with Islamic values. The aim of this study is to determine the background of writing novel “On The Prayer Mat of Love” by Habiburrahman El Shirazy, to determine the intrinsic elements contained in the novel “On The Prayer Mat of Love”, and to determine the values of Islamic education contained in the novel “On The Prayer Mat of Love”. The method used in this study is library research (literature study), which reveals a variety of qualitative information with a thorough and nuanced description to accurately describe a particular thing or phenomenon, which is not limited to data collection, but it includes analysis and interpretation. Primary data of this study is the novel “On The Prayer Mat of Love” authored by Habiburrahman El Shirazy published by Republika in 2006. The Primary data are read and understood by emphasizing critical thinking and analytic hermeneutic approaches. The results of the study show that: The background of writing the novel “On The Prayer Mat of Love” by Habiburrahman El Shirazy is collecting the wisdom stories of friends and salafatussalih scholars. The values of Islamic education contained in the novel “On The Prayer Mat of Love” by Habiburrahman El Shirazy include an understanding of zuhud, fear of adzab, concern for the community/social spirit and sincerity in carrying out all the virtues both in relation to God and humans. The intrinsic elements contained in the novel “On The Prayer Mat of Love” by Habiburrahman El Shirazy include elements of guidance, fear of punishment, sincerity and elements of piety.
