Abstract

One of the problems in road construction in Riau Province is the condition of land wich is mostly consist of soft soil and peat wich has a low supporting strength. Foam mortar is one of the technologies being developed as an alternative to subtitute soil embankment in road construction. Mortar foam as a substitute for embankment for base course and sub base course is under the pavement layer so that it will potentially be soaked at certain times and certain conditions, so there is a possibility of influencing the foam mortar compressive strength. The purposed of this research are to determine the effect of soaking water types on foam mortar compressive strength, to determine the effect of soaked duration and curing type on foam mortar compressive strength, and to determine the effect of soaked water types on elastic modulus of foam mortar at 35 days of soaking. This research is an experimental in the laboratory with cylindrical foam mortar specimens (diameter 100 mm, height 200 mm). The specimens were soaked with 4 types of water, namely clean water, rainwater, peat water and sea water, then tested their compressive strength after soaking for 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35 days. The specimen was cured for 14 days before soaking. The type of curing are wrapped in plastic and soaked in clean water. The results showed that the foam mortar wich soaked by rain water for 35 days with plastic-wrapped curing had the highest unconfined compressive strength value than the other water soaked and a lower soaked duration, that is 12.33 kg/cm2. At 7 days immersion duration there was a decrease in foam mortar compressive strength in all types of soaking water when compared with free compressive strength before soaking. The highest decrease occurred in rainwater soaked (soaked in clean water curing) of 58.38%, while the lowest decrease in occurred in peat water soaked (wrapped in plastic curing)of 27.85%. Plastic wrap curing results a lower value of decrease compressive strength than the soaked in clean water curing. The highest elastic modulus at 35 days immersion based on stress-strain analysis occurred at 485.50 Mpa was on clean water soaked (soaked in clean water curing), the value was not much different from the elastic modulus based on the graphical method of 519.87 Mpa (Eurocode 2- 1992) and 497.71 (ASTM 469). The highest modulus of elasticity based on these two graphical methods occurs in rainwater soaked with curing by plastic wrapped. The highest elastic modulus based on these two graphical methods occurs in rainwater soaked with plastic wrapped curing.
