Abstract

The quality of cementing depends on the strength of the cement, the harder the strength of the cement, the better the quality of cementing. The strength of cement can be increased by adding additives that can increase cement strength but this method can increase cementing costs. One alternative that we can use to increase the strength of cement is to use organic additives, one that can be used is palm oil fly ash (POFA). The large amount of palm oil production in Indonesia, especially in Riau Province, has the potential to produce a lot of palm oil fly ash. The silica content (SiO2) found in palm oil fly ash can function as a pozzolan which is expected to increase the strength of cement so that the cost of buying additives to increase cement strength can be reduced. The use of palm oil fly ash can also reduce the impact of environmental pollution caused by the lack of management of palm oil fly ash waste. This study tested the strength of cement by adding palm oil fly ash additives with variations in concentrations of 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, 10%, and 12.5%. Fly ash used has been filtered using 200 mesh and dried using an oven with a temperature of 105oC for ± 2 hours. Making cement suspension is carried out by mixing water, bentonite, polypropylene glycol, CaCl2, and palm oil fly ash using a mixer, then pouring it into a mold and leaving it to the water bath. The residence is carried out for 24 hours with a temperature of 60oC. Testing of compressive strength and shear bond strength is used by using hydraulic pressure. Based on the research it was found that the strength of cement increased by adding fly ash. The composition of palm oil fly ash which produces the highest value of compressive strength and shear bond is obtained by adding 7.5% and when the addition is continued, the strength of the cement will be reduced. The compressive strength value obtained in the composition of the addition of 7.5% is 1578.09 psi and the shear bond strength is 102.33 psi.
