Abstract

Waste from oil production is one of them in the form of oil-contaminated water or what is more commonly called Produced water. This production water contains hazardous substances if discharged directly to the environment. Therefore, before disposal, the production water must be separated from oil and other hazardous chemicals. One of the methods used for the separation is filtration, which is commonly called in the oil industry Oil removal filter that uses walnut shell media. This research will use activated carbon from oil palm shells, to determine the efficiency of the walnut shell filter media will be compared with filters using activated carbon oil palm shells which will be carried out the same treatment. In addition, palm oil shells are used because it is easier to obtain, which is waste and has not been utilized much and also has high absorption. Activation of the oil palm shell that will be used as a filter. The activation process of activated carbon is done by heating using an oven for one hour at 100 o C, o then 300 C for one hour, and finally activated at 900 o C for 1 hour. The shell is then mashed and filtered with a 40/100 mesh size sieve. The filtration process is carried out using a vertical tube in which a divider is provided to place the filter media which will then be drained with oil-contaminated water. Based on the results of research that has been done, the oil content that is still contained in the formation water after the filtration process is equal to 2.67 ppm with an efficiency of 66.6% in the walnut shell media and 1.06 ppm with an efficiency of 86.7% in the carbon media active palm oil shells, TDS value of 809 ppm in walnut shell media and 774 in palm shell active carbon media.
