Abstract

This study is aimed at finding out impacts of the use of THIEVES strategy in teaching reading comprehension at second grade in SMPN 1 Perhentian Raja 2017/ 2018 academic year. The research was action research in two research cycle. In the research, the researcher collaborated with the English teacher and the students. To analyze the data, the researcher used descriptive quantitative. The data from the observation that had done in every cycle which is analyzed in descriptive explanation while the data from test explained in quantitative. The subject of this research was the second grade of SMPN 1 Perhentian Raja with total number of students 26. The research instruments were observation sheet, interview guidelines, field notes, and test. The result of the research shows that the implementation of the THIEVES strategy improved the students’ reading comprehension as shown from the progress of the mean value of their pre – test and post – test scores. The mean value of their based score was 54 while the mean value of their cycle I score was 69, and the mean value of their cycle II score was 82. The students were able to memorize more word as shown from the progress of the mean value of the quizzes in two cycles. It can be summarized that the students’ problem in comprehending the text could be solved by using THIEVES strategy.
