Abstract

The purpose of this study is to obtain how the study of organology in Gembang musical instruments and specifically to document the process of making a Gembang in Lubuk Bendahara, Rokan IV Koto Subdistrict, Rokan Hulu Regency, Riau Province. According to Andre Schaeffner (in Tulus Hendra Kadir 2005:13), Organology consists of 1) Inventory, 2) Terminology/naming, 3) Classification of musical instruments, 4) Description of musical instrument construction, 5) Production of musical sounds, 6) History of musical instruments, 7) Function of musical instrument, 8) Socio-cultural factors, 9) Status of the music players and how they practice the music, 10) Study of the symbolism and aesthetic aspects of musical instruments. This is a descriptive analysis study that uses qualitative data. The data were obtained through observation, interview, and documentation techniques. This study uses data analysis techniques, which are data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion/verification. From the result of the study, it can be concluded that the Gembang was formerly named Calempong Kayu that belongs to idiophones musical instrument, which has 6 blades and an elongated Umah Gembang like a canoe, but the top and the bottom are not covered. The upper wall of Umah Gembang is given a crease where the rope stretches to place the blades of the blades. The way to play this instrument is by hitting on each of the blades using a wooden bat. There is no symbolism and special aesthetic aspects of Gembang. This instrument is often played while waiting for the harvest in the middle of the field (Banjar-Banjar ladang). Gambang has functioned as a tool for entertaining and communicating. Nowadays, Gambang is rarely played and used.
