Abstract
The lack of students' ability to use spelling and still not in accordance with the General Guidelines for Indonesian Spelling (PUEBI) and there are still many mistakes that students make in writing narrative essays such as writing capital letters, using punctuation marks, and so on. Therefore, this study aims to (1) describe the use of spelling errors in students' narrative essays, (2) describe the causes of spelling errors in students' narrative essays. This research is a library research with a qualitative approach, the data obtained are presented descriptively. Data collection techniques used in this study using non-test techniques with interview and documentation methods. The results of this study are as follows: There are errors in writing capital letters in the first letter at the beginning of sentences and in the middle of sentences, the use of lowercase letters, errors in writing the title of the essay, the use of capital letters after the use of periods, greeting words, names of places or objects and errors period, comma, and hyphen with an error percentage below 10% the error occurs caused by two factors, namely, internal factors and external factors. It can be concluded that the spelling errors made by students when writing narrative essays showed good results with very low error categories.
