Abstract

In everyday life as social beings, humans use various kinds of language variations to express something in the process of interacting with society both formally and informally. Language variations are caused by social interaction activities carried out by very diverse communities or groups. The diversity of this language will increase if the language is used by very many speakers and in a very wide area. This study examines the language variations in the speech of sellers and buyers in the incense market, Jalan Merpati Tangkerang Tengah, Marpoyan Damai District, Pekanbaru City with the problem (1) what are the language variations found in the speeches of sellers and buyers in the incense market at Merpati Tangkerang Tengah Street, Marpoyan Damai District, Kota Pekanbaru, and (2) what are the functions of language variation in the speech of sellers and buyers at the incense market, Jalan Merpati Tangkerang Tengah, Marpoyan Damai District, Pekanbaru City. The theory used in this study is the theory put forward by Abdul Chaer and Leonie Agustina (2010), and Alwasilah A. Chaedar (1993) relating to language variation and the function of language variation. The method used is content analysis and the research approach used is a qualitative approach. Based on the results of this study, there are 70 data, namely (1) language variations in the speech of sellers and buyers in the incense market Jalan Merpati Tangkerang Tengah, Marpoyan Damai District, Pekanbaru City, researchers found as many as 70 data with details of language variations in terms of speakers totaling 52 data, language variations in terms of usage, there are 4 data, language variations in terms of formality are 14 data, and language variations in terms of facilities, namely in total there are 70 data as oral means. (2) the function of language variation in the speech of sellers and buyers in the incense market, Jalan Merpati Tangkerang Tengah, Marpoyan Damai District, Pekanbaru City, researchers found as many as 70 data with details of personal functions totaling 5 data, regulatory functions totaling 7 data, interactional functions totaling 38 data, instrumental functions there are 7 data, the euristic function is 2 data, and the representational function is 11 data. The researcher did not find the imaginative function because the imaginative function is imaginary, and the most commonly found is the interactional function because in the Incense market there is still frequent bargaining which causes interactions between sellers and buyers.
