Abstract

Poetry has a beautiful language. The beauty of the language can be seen from the use of sound and poetry. The study of the use of figurative language and word choice in literature is stylistics. The stylistic studies include figurative language (figure of speech) and word choice (diction). The problem in this research is (1) what is the figurative language contained in the collection of the poetry of “Jangan Kutuk Aku Jadi Melayu” by Marhalim Zaini? (2) what are the choices of words contained in the collection of the poetry Don't Kutuk Aku Jadi Melayu by Marhalim Zaini? The purpose of this research is to describe, analyze and interpret the figurative language and choice of words contained in the collection of the poem Marhalim Zaini's Don't Kutuk Aku Jadi Melayu. The scope of this research is included in the scope of literature, especially literary criticism, namely stylistics. The theory used in this study refers to various theories, namely Nurgiyantoro (2014) about stylistic studies, Keraf (2010) about diction, and other supporting theories. The data of this research amounted to 12 poetry titles taken from the collection of poetry Don't Kutuk Aku Jadi Melayu by Marhalim Zaini. The method used is descriptive method. The approach used in this research is a qualitative approach. This type of research is literature. Data collection techniques using hermeneutic techniques. Content analysis technique is an in-depth study of the poem which is then simplified so that it is easy to interpret. The results of this study concluded that the figurative language (figure of speech) contained in Marhalim Zaini's collection of the poetry Don't Kutuk Aku Jadi Melayu, amounted to 70 data in 12 poetry titles, namely comparative figures: simile, metaphor, personafication, allegory, and related figures: metonomy, synekdoki. An example of the figurative language of the word waving in the poem "Pulau Kikis Di Bengkalis Tak Habis-Habis Menangis" is a sign of comparison of personification, namely a form of display that gives inanimate objects with human characteristics. The choice of words (diction) contained in the collection of the poetry Don't Curse Aku Jadi Melayu totals 192 data in 12 poetry titles, namely choice of connotations, abstract words, concrete words, special words, jargon, slang words, foreign words and loan words. An example of the choice of words contained in the poem "Di Daun Tingkap yang Broken Sebelah", there is a choice of concrete words (diction) in the verse waiting for the dust of the canes with wings.
