Abstract

Memorizing Al-Qur'an is not easy, but it is also not impossible because there were many people who had memorized Al-Qur'an since the period of the Prophet. In formal or private schools, introducing Al-Qur'an to students, teaching them to recite, and memorizing are the responsibility of the teachers. Therefore, in order to fulfill the duties as teachers in providing guidance, the teachers must make various efforts because the success of students in memorizing Al-Qur’an depends on the efforts made by the teachers. The aim of this study is to investigate the efforts of Tahfidz Teachers and the obstacles faced by the teachers in improving students’ ability to memorize Al-Qur'an at SMP IT BUNAYYA, Pekanbaru City. The type of this study is a qualitative field research. The subjects of this study are Tahfidz teachers and students of SMP IT BUNAYYA. The data collection techniques used are interviews and documentation. Furthermore, the data are presented in an appropriate form so that it is easy to read and understand, then the data are analyzed and conclusions are drawn. Based on the results of the study, the efforts made by the teachers in improving the students’ ability to memorize Al-Qur'an at SMP IT BUNAYYA, are: A. Providing motivation to students, such as giving praise when they can memorize Al-Qur'an well; B. Giving assignments and punishments to students (the teachers give rote tasks to be memorized, and the punishments are given if the assignments are not carried out by students); C. Guiding the students to keep doing repetition; and D. Applying various methods. The obstacles faced by the teachers in improving students’ Al-Qur'an memorization are: 1. There are some students who have not been able to read Al-Qur'an well; 2. The health of teachers can interfere with concentration in teaching; 3. Some students are lazy to memorize Al-Qur'an; and 4. The intelligence levels of students are different.
