Abstract

Interpersonal communication is an interaction that occurs between individuals. Every elderly person who lives in a nursing home will be served by caregivers every day. Therefore, the use of appropriate communication is needed for a caregiver, because it has an important role in assisting the elderly. This study aims to determine interpersonal communication between caregivers and the elderly in the UPT Social Services Tresna Werdha Khusnul Khotimah Pekanbaru. The research method used is a qualitative method. Data collection techniques used were observation, interviews and documentation. The subjects in this study were the Head of the Social Services Section, caregivers as executors of social services and the elderly. The results of this study indicate that caregiver and elderly interpersonal communication consists of two forms, namely verbal communication and non-verbal communication. The process of caregiver and elderly interpersonal communication has been achieved well, where verbal communication that occurs is through oral communication which includes as a medium for the place of storytelling, giving rebuke, giving advice, giving appreciation and reading the newspaper to the elderly. While nonverbal communication that occurs is gesture communication which includes giving touch, smile, shaking his head.
