Abstract

Film is a work of art that displays reality through audio-visual that can give significant effects on humans as audiences. Film can display things that occur in various aspects of life. The storyline in a film can offer the values of social and cultural criticism to educate the society. The Greatest Showman has succeeded in showing reality of physical and social class discrimination that occurred in the United States in the 18th century. Discrimination is an attitude, action or behavior that reflects injustice against a person based on race, religion, ethnicity, physical, and social class. This study uses qualitative methods and aims to determine the semiotics analysis of physical and social class discrimination in this film. Therefore, to identify these problems deeply and comprehensively, the author uses John Fiske's semiotics analysis through 3 levels of coding process such as the level of reality that can be seen from appearance, clothing, behavior and expression. The level of representation that can be seen from action, dialogue, conflict, and music. And the level of ideology that can be seen from social class and race. The results through these 3 levels are dominated by appearances, expressions, actions, dialogues, music that represents the situation, racial and social class. If discrimination keeps happening continuously, it causes the victims to lose interest, anxiety, sadness, guilt, and mental disorders such as depression. But until now, discrimination still happens everywhere. The making of discrimination-themed films is a tangible evidence that anti-discriminatory filmmakers are still struggling to fight discrimination.
