Abstract

Oil production can produce large liquid waste. The liquid waste produced from the oil and gas production process reaches 80%, even in old oil fields it can reach 95%. Produced water is the largest liquid waste generated from these activities. Produced water contains salts, oils and fats as well as inorganic and organic compounds. If the produced water is not treated and discharged directly into water surface such as rivers, lakes or the sea, it will have a negative impact on the aquatic ecosystem and can damage the environment. The purpose of this study was to reduce the level of turbidity, oil and grease, iron concentration and pH of water contained in produced water according to the quality standards set by the government. The approach taken in this research is to make activate carbon from coconut husk which is chemically activated using 10% NaOH activator. The next step is to use the filtration method by making a series of water treatment units composed of 3 cartrige filters containing silica sand, KASK (Coconut Coir Activated Carbon) and walnut which will be contacted with produced water. The results showed that the optimum filtration method was obtained in the fourth test using a combination of silica sand media, KASK and walnut with an efficiency value of 83.43% reduction in turbidity levels, 76.92% oil and fat, 69.89% Fe metal concentration. and water pH 7.40. The results obtained have met the quality standards set by the State Minister for the Environment and the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesian.
