Abstract

This research is exploring cohesive devices in the students’ textbook. The objectives of this research is to know the types of cohesive devices which applied in ten texts and to analyze the function of cohesive devices in the students’ textbook. The methodology of this research is qualitative method. The source of the data in this research is Student’s textbook. The data are in the form of sentences, and there are ten texts as the source of this reseaerch. The instrument of this research is documentation. The researcher reads and analyzes the text using Halliday and Hasan’s theory. From the analysis the researcher find four types of cohesive devices which are exist in the nine texts, they are reference ( personal, demonstrative, comparative), substitution ( nominal, verbal, clausal ), ellipsis ( nominal, verbal, clausal ) and conjunction ( additive, adversative, causal, temporal ). The finding by this research presents the analysis data that the dominant types of cohesive devices is reference which are discovered in the ten texts and then conjunction which also appears in all texts, but the total number of reference is fewer than conjunction. The lowest frequent of the type are ellipsis and substitution, for ellipsis is only exist in eight of ten texts, while substitution is identified only in two of nine texts, it is because very few of texts use removal and replacement word in its sentences. The researcher has couonted the all data manually and accurately.
