Abstract

Critical debate is a technique for developing students’ critical thinking to give their personal view of an issue in the form of arguments or opinions delivered in debating activity. The objective of this research was to find out whether there was significant effect of critical debate technique towards students’ speaking skill of the second year students at SMK Taruna Satria Pekanbaru. This research was experimental research.This research focused on speaking their argument and opinion. Then the researcher applied the critical debate technique doing the research. The researcher applied the critical debate technique in experimental class. while, in control class, the researcher did not apply strategy. Furthermore, the researcher gave two tests for the students, pre test and post test. The research of pre-test showed that the average score pre-test in experimental class was 47,65 and post-test was 60,40. While, the score of posttest in control class was 52,05.There was improvement of the students’ speaking skill after getting treatment by using critical debate technique. Then, the tcalculated by using paired sample test was 13,290. It was higher than t-table 2,093. In brief, it can be concluded that there was significant effect of critical debate technique towards the students’ speaking skill at SMK Taruna Pekanbaru.
