Abstract

Interlanguage pragmatic competence is how nonnative speaker (NNSs) comprehend and produce action from source language to target language. It means that the fourth semester students or English foreign language (EFL) learners’ ability should understand that certain with language proficiency. Interlanguage pragmatic competence have relationship with language proficiency, where language proficiency is vitally important for the acquisition of second language pragmatic. This study is to find out the language proficiency level of students’ interlanguage competence of the fourth semester of English study program at FKIP UIR. Method of this study was descriptive qualitative. The researcher used Written Discourse Completion Tasks (WDCT) to assess the questionnaire of the fourth semester students of English Study Program at FKIP UIR. The researcher has taken the data from IV A until IV F with opportunistic sampling. In analyzing the data, the researcher focused on language proficiency level of request in directive speech act. The result of this study describes that the fourth semester students of English Study Program at FKIP UIR have almost similar category of level proficiency. There are eight of twenty five students with high level, nine of twenty five students with medium level and eight of twenty five students with low language proficiency level. The medium language proficiency becomes the category of level that has the most number of participant with sentence pattern as apology or gratitude, request, and explanation statement of request context in daily activity.
