Abstract

The objective of the research was to find out (first) the ability of the fourth semester students in Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Islamic University of Riau in translating a report text, and (second) the methods used by the fourth semester students in Teacher Training And Education Faculty of Islamic University of Riau in translating a report text. The research design was qualitative research. The research was held on January upto April 2018 at Teacher Training And Education Faculty of Islamic University of Riau. The research participants were 30 of the fourth semester students. The data collection technique used were; (first) test and, (second) questionnaire. The data analysis technique was statistical descriptive. The research result showed that; (first) the students’ translation ability in translating a report text were very good; and (second) the students’ methods in translation were also very good, however, they were dominant in word for word translation and less in idiomatic translation methods. In conclusion the research found that the translation method of the fourth semester students in Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Islamic University of Riau in translating a report text influence the student’s translation ability.
