Abstract

This research is exploring cohesive devices in editorial boards of The Jakarta Post. The objective of this research is to identify the type of cohesive devices which appear in the editorial boards of The Jakarta Post and to explain the function of cohesive devices in editorial boards of The Jakarta Post. Cohesive or English Cohesion is expressed partly the grammar and partly through the vocabulary alsodefined as a links that hold a text together and give it meaning. Cohesive devices consist into two part namely grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion. Grammatical cohesion consists of reference, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction. Lexical cohesion consists of reiteration and collocation. The methodology of this research is qualitative method. The research builds complex, holistic picture, analyzes words, reports detailed view of information, and conducted the study in natural setting. The source of the data in this research is editorial boards of The Jakarta Post issued in January, February and March 2016. The data is taken from website of The Jakarta Post; there are ten texts as the source of this research which took in every Monday edition. The instrument of this research is documentation, the researcher read and analyzes the text using Halliday and Hasan theory. The finding of this research showed that there were 364 data of ties i.e. reference 130, substitution and ellipsis 2, conjunction 122, and lexical cohesion are: reiteration 72, collocation 38. From the data above, the most prominent type is reference (130 data) especially personal reference (53 data), it contrasts with others types of cohesive devices is substitution and ellipsis which found 2 data in the text 1 and text 3.Therefore, it can be concluded that the function of cohesive devices work together with the nature of presenting the information of the news.
