Abstract

Vocabulary is a basic skill to communicate with other people. In addition, vocabulary mastery has an important role for the four language skills. In context, it is the way to be able to identify the meaning of the vocabulary use in academic context. In fact, there are five levels to measure the vocabulary mastery in context including poor, fair, good, very good, and excellent. The objective of this research was to find out the level of vocabulary mastery in context of the sixth semester at English Language Education of FKIP-UIR on 2017/2018 academic year. This research used descriptive quantitative research. The population of this research was the sixth semester. Then, class of VI/B in English Language Education was selected as the sample. The samples were 26 students. The researcher used purposive sampling technique to take the sample which focused on one class. The instrument used in this research was written test. The result of the study showed that the students of sixth semester were in poor level of vocabulary mastery in context. It was found based on some indicators of vocabulary including nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Instead, the result showed that there were 3 students got “Good Level”, 3 students got “Fair Level”, and 20 students got “Poor Level”. Based on the explanation above, it could b concluded that the majority level of students’ vocabulary mastery in context was in poor level.
