Abstract
Critical reading ability is the ability to realize the writers’ ideas on the text and also demands the reader to make judgements about the ideas. In university level, the students suppose to have a good critical reading ability to help them to understand the material given by the teacher by assesing the strengtht of the evidence and the arguement by relating students’ background knowledge. The purpose of this study is to find out the students’ ability in critical reading at the fourth semester students of English Language Eduaction at Universitas Islam Riau. The reseacrh design of this study was mixed methode research. This research only analysed and described the students’ critical reading ability. The instrument used to get the information about the result of students’ critical reading ability was written test. The finding of the test showed that the students’ critcal reading ability level from 25 students, 8 students got (32%) average level, 6 students got (24%) good level, and 11 got (44%) poor level. The result of the finding found that the level of students’ critical reading ability is in average level (50,11%).
