Abstract
This research had implemented Problem Based Learning toward srudents’ speaking ability at the fisrt grade of Sekolah Model SMA Negeri 1 Kampar Kiri. The students have difficulties to respond questions which are given by teacher. This situation made the students bored, less motivated and inactive. Problem Based Learning is teaching model characterized by real problem as a context for learners to learn critical thinking and problem-solving skills and to get knowledge (Duch, 1995 in Aris Shoimins’ book). The research design was used true-experimental research. The researcher was conducted two classes as a sample in this research. There are experimental (100) class and control class. The subjects of this research are the first grade of Sekolah Model SMA Negeri 1 Kampar Kiri. X IPA 1 as experimental class and X IPA 2 as control class. The researcher applied six meetings included post-test and pre-test. According to the speaking performance, students had accomplished progress in vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar and fluency. This finding showed there was significant effect in speaking ability after using Problem Based Learning model.
