Abstract
The rapid development of information technology has encouraged the emergence of various forms of electronic transactions, one of which is the practice of buying and selling online game accounts through Facebook social media groups. In practice, these transactions often involve a third party known as a joint account service (rekber), which acts as an intermediary to ensure the security of transactions between sellers and buyers. However, in reality, many fraud cases occur involving irresponsible rekber administrators, causing financial losses to consumers. This condition raises legal issues regarding how consumer legal protection is implemented in the practice of buying and selling online game accounts through social media platforms. The problems formulated in this research are how the mechanism of consumer protection can be implemented in the practice of buying and selling game accounts through Facebook groups involving third parties (rekber), and what obstacles are faced in providing legal protection for consumers in such transactions. This research uses an empirical legal research method with a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were obtained through interviews with consumers who experienced losses, joint account service providers, and sellers who conduct game account transactions through Facebook. In addition, secondary data were collected from laws and regulations, books, journals, and other relevant literature related to consumer protection, particularly Law Number 8 of 1999 concerning Consumer Protection. The results of this study indicate that consumer protection in the practice of buying and selling game accounts through Facebook involving joint account services has not been implemented optimally. This is caused by the lack of supervision over digital transactions, the absence of specific regulations governing joint account services, and the low level of public legal awareness in conducting online transactions. Therefore, stronger supervision, public education, and clearer regulations are necessary to ensure effective consumer protection in electronic transactions.
